Recent research from Griffith University’s Asia-Pacific Centre for Franchising Excellence shows there are an estimated 70,700 business format franchised units in Australia. That’s thousands of Australians enjoying a rewarding and fulfilling career in franchising. Although franchising can sound like an attractive proposition with significant financial and lifestyle benefits, it’s not the right fit for everyone. Before you sign on the dotted line, it’s important you’re prepared and ready for the challenge.
You might think you’d need lots of qualifications and skills, but I’ve seen successful franchisees that come from a variety of different backgrounds. However, all successful franchisees have certain traits in common. Read on to see if you have what it takes to thrive in a franchising business.
The ‘can-do’ attitude
There are many skills your franchisor can impart through guidance and assistance; namely, sales, marketing and product selection. A positive attitude is, however, something that can’t really be taught. Come in with the right attitude and you’ll be amazed with how much you achieve.
I’ve seen franchisees transition from having no experience in sales, to being absolute professionals. It’s all down to their persistent nature and ‘can-do’ outlook.
A natural flare for people
While there’s no expectation that franchisees have to be perfect from the get go, having strong interpersonal skills is probably the most important trait of successful franchisees. Not only will you constantly be interacting with customers, but you’ll also have to effectively communicate with staff. Doing so in a professional and sophisticated manner is how you will build trust and respect.
People skills are without doubt something which improves with practice. It is essential however to understand that this is a vital skill – key to any high-performing business.
Strong work ethic
It’s no secret that franchising offers many perks. Flexibility and the fact that you are your own boss are two of the typical draw cards for many candidates. While all this is true, it doesn’t mean you should go into franchising for an easy ride. Running a successful franchise requires hard work and resilience, particularly in the initial stages of operation.
The most successful franchisees are those who are willing to go above and beyond to drive great results. This not only includes working hard to ensure you’re delivering consistent customer service and facilitating great relationships with your staff, but really doing your homework on the industry you’re in. What are the key trends shaping the industry? What are people talking about? What do your customers want to see more or less of? It’s this sort of hard working ethic and determination that will give you that unique edge, setting you aside from competitors.
