Analysis conducted by technology security company Websense shows that spammers are increasingly using social engineering techniques to lure clicks from unsuspecting email receivers, indicating that “the threat landscape is dangerous and growing more sophisticated”.
Emails pertaining to new job offers, new-look company websites and the old favourite, impotence drugs, were some of the triggers used, as well as a rehash of older templates with modifications to keep up with more recent events.
Websense also reported that malicious style compromises within spam is a trend that continues to rise.
Among the more interesting data, Websense also found that:
- 93% of all email was spam;
- 84% of spam included an embedded URL;
- 2.5% of spam emails where phishing attacks.
