Ford has launched Intelligent Speed Limiter, technology they say will automatically slow down cars according to road speed limits.
The new technology works via a camera that is placed on the windscreen. The camera then reads road signs and sets the car’s speed accordingly. If the speed limit rises, the driver is able to accelerate to the new limit – but not past it.
“Drivers are not always conscious of speeding and sometimes only becoming aware they were going too fast when they receive a fine in the mail or are pulled over by law enforcement,” Ford of Europe Active Safety Supervisor Stefan Kappes said in a blog post.
“Intelligent Speed Limiter can remove one of the stresses of driving, helping ensure customers remain within the legal speed limit.”
Ford is moving the new Intelligent Speed Limiter technology on its S-MAX line of vehicles, which also includes the Pedestrian Detection system, technology that detects people in the road and automatically applies the brakes.
