The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has today urged those in the egg industry to look over their free range claims, citing a $300,000 penalty against Pirovic Enterprises as a reminder for industry participants to take heed.
The competition watchdog is attempting to smash open an alleged egg cartel, claiming farmers in the $1.7bn industry were encouraged to manipulate profits by artificially decreasing supply.
Western Australian wholesalers C.I. & Co Pty Ltd, and Antonio Pisano and Anna Pisano have been found to have misled the public by labelling and selling cartons of eggs labelled ‘free range’ when a substantial proportion of the eggs were not free range.
