Mobile and tablet use continues to grow, and with the most fruitful shopping period upon us – the time to ensure your site is optimised for mobile is yesterday.

The just-released ninth annual Australian Mobile Phone Lifestyle Index by AIMIA, looked at how Australians are using mobile phones for online shopping and how this is affecting in-store retailing.

Notably the report also highlighted the importance of mobile as a platform for researching a purchase – consumers frequently compare prices online, and read product reviews.

The solid growth in smartphone use across the Australian population correlates with an increase in online shopping – almost 30 per cent of respondents decreased their in-store purchasing since they started buying on their mobile phones.

Key statistics included:

  • 40 per cent of respondents who currently use a mobile phone for purchasing believe the number of purchases they make from their phone will increase in the next six months.
  • Only 5 per cent of respondents said they think their purchases will decrease, and just over half believe their number of purchases will remain the same.

What are consumers purchasing on mobile?

The majority of purchases (65 per cent) are digital products, including ringtones, music, video clips, apps or games. This was followed by the purchase of tickets – such as movie or plane tickets (53 per cent), and books (34 per cent).

The research also found that 32 per cent of respondents use their mobile phone to purchase clothes, shoes and jewellery while 19 per cent use their device for consumer electronics and 12 per cent for services such as insurance and gardening.
