Unions ensure workers not worse off from awards

ACTU secretary Jeff Lawrence said unions would fight hard for workers rights to ensure they are not worse off under the new changes to modern awards.

“Unions will make use of this new legal avenue and continue to push for better pay and conditions for all workers as award modernisation continues,” he said.

The Australian Industrial Relations Commission yesterday announced plans to delay the introduction of the award modernisation scheme from 1 January 2010 to 1 July 2010, in order to give employers time to prepare for the changes.

Lawrence said unions were concerned the current process of award modernisation has not met all objectives that unions would have liked. He said they remain concerned that workers in some industries risk losing take-home pay and conditions.

However he said they remain dedicated to pursuing workers rights.

“Unions will pursue this avenue and will continue to work hard to represent workers and prevent them from being disadvantaged.”
