A new survey has found that Australian SMEs are embracing the web, with over 95 percent now connected to the internet.
The Sensis 2009 e-Business Report found that over 95 percent of SMEs are connected to the internet, 57 percent have a business website; and a further 12 percent intend to have a website up and running within the next 12 months.
The results show that SMEs are becoming more comfortable with online technologies and are realising the benefits of e-business.
Online selling remains a popular trend, with the percentage of SMEs taking orders online increasing from 54 percent in 2008 to 56 percent in 2009. Of those businesses, more than two-thirds indicated they had already recovered their investment in e-commerce.
According to the research, 71 percent said having an online business enhanced business effectiveness in areas such as customer awareness, market research, enquiries and sales.
The report’s author Ms Christena Singh said SMEs are becoming “more creative with the way in which they market their products and services online, and more adventurous with the technology they purchase.”
Of those not connected to the internet, 58 percent said they had no need for it, while 14 percent said they relied on word of mouth for information.
