With the sacking of 1850 Pacific Brands workers, the manufacturing industry is suffering and small businesses are the worst affected according to trade and industry consultant Martin Feil.
According to Feil, federal and state manufacturing policy should place more emphasis on small business, as its current focus is on big business.
“We’ve got hundreds of thousands of small manufacturing businesses… we must work out how thousands of small businesses can share services and how we can give them really good rules and access to compliance if we’re going to import goods.”
Feil believes that the Government is on the right track in setting up innovation centres in its Enterprise Connect Program, however he claims that the focus needs to be on working out how businesses can co-operate.
