As Halloween approaches, Symantec’s latest MessageLabs Intelligence Report Analysis has revealed an increase in seasonally-themed spam.
The report found that in mid-October, Halloween spam accounted for 0.5 percent of all spam, increasing steadily and peaking at 500 million emails circulating worldwide daily as the holiday draws closer.
According to MessageLabs Intelligence Senior Analyst, Paul Wood, spammers will typically try to capitalise on the holiday season in order to lure their victims in.
“As is typical with spammers this time of year, we are seeing them try to capitalise on the holiday season,” he said.
The report also found an increase in spam levels in Australia by two percent to account for 92.7 percent of all emails received by businesses, higher than the global average of 88.1 percent.
Businesses are being encouraged to ensure they are aware of possible threats and take appropriate measures to protect themselves.
