In an effort to protect jobs for local workers, the Federal Government has announced that foreign guest workers will now be paid market rates.
Immigration Minister Chris Evans said the changes will mean employers can no longer pay overseas workers less than locals.
“The Rudd Government has made it clear that temporary skilled overseas workers should not be employed ahead of local workers because they are a cheaper option,” Fairfax newspapers quoted him as saying.
Evans said overseas workers should not be used as a “cheap form of labour or used to undercut Australian wages and conditions.”
