Optus delivers stronger 3G network and expands 4G services

Optus has officially launched one of the country’s largest 3G network enhancement projects together with the expansion of the availability of  its 4G services to businesses in Sydney and Perth.

The latest development comes after previous network initiatives launched in September 2011 to boost indoor coverage and deliver faster data speeds for 3G customers.

In the latest round on enhancements, Optus has upgraded more than 1,000 3G mobile sites using its 900Mhz spectrum resulting in stronger 3G performance for mobile customers across regional centres and major capital cities including Sydney, Melbourne, Darwin and Perth.

“Our customers are making the most of these network enhancements with a 20 percent increase in 3G data usage in our upgraded areas,” Optus managing director Günther Ottendorfer said.

Ottendorfer said the intention is to build the best mobile network in Australia, which requires them to have a strong foundation in 3G mobile, while transitioning into a 4G world.

SMBs, enterprise and government customers in Sydney and Perth will also soon be able to experience Optus 4G USB mobile broadband and mobile Wi-Fi hotspots.

“As Australians rely more on smartphones and other connected devices, our goal is to have one single integrated 4G network that utilises the latest LTE technologies to offer our customers a great 4G network experience,” Ottendorfer said.

In preparation for a major national 4G TD-LTE network in 2013, Optus has opened its trial network using this next generation 4G LTE technology at the Optus campus in Macquarie Park and St Marys in Western Sydney.

The new network will have a series of benefits to Optus customers across Australia including, faster mobile broadband to households and businesses in metropolitan Australia. It will also have a stronger network performance as customer experience with Australia’s highest capacity 4G network in metropolitan areas.
