Just bought yourself an iPad? Too slow. There’s a newer version. The new device offers more memory, a much faster, dual-core chip, as well as front and back cameras and new OS. It’s thin (8.8mm) and lighter (601 grams). It measures 241.2 by 185.7mm, compared to the iPad’s 242.8 by 189.7mm though the screen size remains the same. The front-facing camera has a VGA (640 by 480 pixel) resolution, while the back one offers a higher 720p (720 by 1028 pixel) resolution. The front camera has an automatic focus, while the back camera has a fixed focus. You’ll be able to use them for both video and Skype (propped up against something or when held in one of the custom covers that are held in place with magnets). Just like the iPad, the iPad 2 comes in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models.
At a function in San Francisco today Apple CEO Steve Jobs – who has been on medical leave as he battles pancreatic cancer – came onto stage for the launch of the Apple iPad 2.
“Our competitors are looking at this like it’s the next PC market. That is not the right approach to this… These are post-PC devices that need to be easier to use than a PC, more intuitive,” said Mr Jobs.
“The hardware and software need to intertwine more than they do on a PC. We think we’re on the right path with this.”
To max out your playtime, there are also new versions of Mac software including Facetime video calling, Photo Booth and Garage Band.
The iPad 2 will be shipped to Australia 0n 25 March this year, but it’s not yet clear when consumers will be able to purchase it.
