Almost two-thirds of people put reputation before price when hiring a tradesman, with many willing to spend the necessary time and money to ensure the right person is hired for the job.
In a survey of 1,222 people conducted by PickAQuote.com.au, 69 percent of Australians who have hired a tradesman put reputation before price, compared with 31 percent who said cost was the deciding factor.
People are also willing to do their research before hiring, with 90 percent getting at least two quotes before hiring and almost half getting three quotes to ensure the right hire is made.
“No matter how large or small the job, whether painting a fence, building a website or fixing a leaking pipe, Australian’s are placing their trust in a tradesperson to do the job effectively and efficiently, which is why reputation is so important,” PickAQuote Director Marcus Lim said.
67 percent of respondents said they don’t trust a tradesperson to be alone in their home whilst working on a job.
The survey also found:
- On average, Australians say tradespersons are usually 58 minutes late;
- Married people and those in defacto relationships are more likely to outsource jobs around the house, with 81 percent indicating they’ve hired a tradesperson or used another service in the past 12 months, compared with 69 percent of singles;
- Almost one-in-two Australians have hired an electrician in the past 12 months (46 percent), while 44 percent have hired a plumber and 40 percent have hired an accountant or someone to complete their tax return; and
- 19 percent have hired a gardener or landscape designer in the past 12 months to work on the backyard.
