Social networking giant Twitter has announced a radical new plan that could see businesses being charged for their use of the site, in an effort to generate new revenue streams.
Talk was rife over the weekend about the paid services; with Twitter co-founder Biz Stone hinting at a possible plan to introduce a range of paid features specifically for businesses, which include detailed analytics reports highlighting just how effective tweets are on the site.
In an interview with Venture Beat, Stone said: “Twitter will still be free for everybody and we’ll still tell them to go crazy with it. But we’ve identified a selection of things businesses say are helping to make them more profit.”
The news comes after Twitter introduced a developer application last week, allowing developers to show the location of any “tweet” made on the site, using GPS location data. The service is “opt-in” only.
