The Senate has rejected the Government’s Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS).
When put to a vote today, 42 voted against, while 30 voted for.
The Australian Greens say the Government’s 2020 emissions reduction targets (of between five and 25 percent) are too timid, while the Coalition and Independent senator Nick Xenophon said the Government should consider an alternative scheme – based on the Frontier Economics report they commissioned.
The Government must now wait three months before introducing the bill again.
