The rule seems to be that just as you’ve upgraded your tech, the newest release comes along – and it’s expensive to keep up.
As Australian mobile service providers roll out their 4G networks across the country this month, small business owners may be asking themselves whether it’s worth upgrading their devices to make use of 4G.
Optus has announced the launch of its 4G network in Wollongong, with more upgrades and expansions to come in the greater Illawarra area in the next six months.
This follows the upgrading of over 4,000 Optus 3G sites across metro and rural areas around Australia to boost signals and connectivity.
Telstra, too, recently said it will boost its 4G coverage to reach up to two thirds of the population in the next few months. Its network is already available in 100 metro and regional locations, offering typical download speeds of up to 40mpbs and up-link speeds of up to 10mpbs.
Not wanting to be left behind, Vodafone has also heightened its 4G efforts recently, announcing last week it’s now taking on new customers looking to use the service.
Benoit Hanssen, head of the Vodafone network, believes Vodafone currently has an advantage over other networks thanks to its spectrum.
“Put simply, the wider the radio channel, the fatter the pipe, which translates into faster data speeds for customers. Vodafone is currently the only carrier that has this spectrum band in all five major mainland state capital cities,” he said.
So with telcos looking to 4G as the future, where does that leave small business owners who have only just upgraded their technology?
John Bonciolli, executive director of Telstra Small Business, said that 4G can help businesses that are embracing the bring your own device (BYOD) trend.
“Mobility is a key ingredient in remaining competitive, and the use of 4G helps small business owners to run ‘business as usual’ when they are out of the office and on the go,” Bonciolli said.
“Small business owners who choose to upgrade to a 4G device will find that they can access their files, the internet and other information at a much faster rate, which in turn, improves efficiency and productivity,” he added.
