Andrew Vincent June 21, 2010 One of the most important roles a business owner can play is that of a leader. Yet it is one of the roles that as a business coach I hear many business owners say they are not good at, don’t believe they can do or just don’t want to do. However, the good news is that leadership is a skill that can be learnt and developed with time and commitment. The Definition of Leadership According to Wikipedia, Leadership is the ‘process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task’. Another definition is ‘leadership is ultimately about creating a way for people to contribute to making something extraordinary happen’. The latter being a goal that the most successful business owners achieve. I think a lot of people don’t see themselves as a leader because they relate being a leader to being ‘the boss’. Often the reason they quit working for ‘the boss’ and set up their own business was because they wanted to get away from all the negative connotations that go with that term.
