Even before it’s introduction, the Government’s emissions trading scheme is bringing unexpected benefits to Victorian businesses, who are pocketing hundreds of thousands of dollars in profit, by using energy efficient technologies to minimise emissions.
According to Sustainability Victoria, businesses are reaping the rewards of energy efficient technologies. Food giant Nestlé, has made changes to the refrigeration systems at the company’s Pakenham plant, reducing total site energy consumption by 6 percent, with the $365,000 cost to be recovered within six years. Nestlé made the savings with an updated control system and compressors in line with recommendations from Best Practice Guides produced by Sustainability Victoria.
Leigh Bernoth, manager of sustainable business for Sustainability Victoria, believes there are significant benefits for small businesses that utilise green technologies.
“It is our experience that business can readily reduce energy costs by up to 30 percent by implementing simple and effective best practice solutions to their service equipment,” he said.
Sustainability Victoria will be on hand at the Carbon Reduction and Trading Expo, running from March 31 to April 2 in Melbourne, to help businesses identify savings when it comes to eco-friendly products.
