The Storm’s fall from grace has made some NRL sponsors nervous, with fears the salary cap rorting may extend across more teams.
The Managing Director of 1800 TAXMAN, a minor sponsor of South Sydney, has pointed the finger at rival clubs, who have remained largely silent as the Storm scandal raged. “The bible says that ‘he who hasn’t sinned cast the first stone’ … well it has been a few days and we are still waiting for the Storm to be condemned by their competitors”, said Adrian Raftery.
Silence is not evidence of fraud, but Raftery reminds league fans that fraud takes several people to orchestrate, and considers it unlikely that the Storm is the only team reaping the benefits of better players at a higher price. The follow-on effects of breaching a salary cap extend to the players, who are then at risk of committing tax fraud on undisclosed income. He has called upon upper club management across the Australian NRL competition to “clean itself 100%”.
