The NSW Government has released its first AI strategy to create jobs and improve services to citizens.
Premier Gladys Berejiklian emphasised the positive impact that this would have on job creation in IT, cyber security, data science and engineering.
“This is great news for citizens, researchers and businesses. We know how important AI is and this strategy puts us at the forefront of this emerging space,” Ms Berejiklian said.
“Science, technology, engineering and mathematics will play a pivotal role in shaping our State’s future economy and we cannot be spectators on the sidelines. We must lead and be the engine room for future jobs.”
There are five key areas of this strategy.
- Building public trust: bolstering public confidence in AI by openly acknowledging its strengths and weaknesses.
- Digital uplift: focusing on digital up-skilling for the NSW public sector.
- Building data capability: using data safely and securely.
- Procurement: updating procurement frameworks through innovation.
- Innovation and collaboration: working closer with industry and academia to create better service delivery.
The strategy will also include a NSW AI Advisory Committee to guide the government.
This is the first Advisory Committee of its kind in Australia. The Committee will be chaired by the NSW Government Chief Data Scientist, Ian Oppermann.
Minister for Customer Service Victor Dominello noted the widespread impacts of the strategy.
“Whether it’s at home, online, on the road or at the supermarket, the use of AI is becoming more prevalent in day-to-day life and is often deployed in subtle ways to make customer interactions and services more seamless,” Mr Dominello said.
“This strategy brings together the three key pillars of privacy, transparency and security, within the prism of ethics.”
This strategy is the third component of the NSW Government’s overall AI approach. The Government has also released an AI ethics policy and an AI user guide.
The strategy will be based on a 12-18 month timeframe. In 12 months, the Government will assess whether the commitments under this strategy have delivered value.
