Apple is giving Mac fans a preview of its updated operating system (OS), with Mountain Lion set to bring some of the iPads best features to desktop and laptop computers.
The developer preview of OS X Mountain Lion delivers some of the iPads most popular apps and features to the Mac, including Messages, Notes, Reminders, Game Centre, Notification Center, Share Sheets, Twitter integration and AirPlay Mirroring, and will be available to the general public later in the year.
“The Mac is on a roll, growing faster than the PC for 23 straight quarters, and with Mountain Lion things get even better,” Apple senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing Philip Schiller.
The new Messages app replaces iChat and allows users to send unlimited messages, high-quality photos and videos directly from their Mac to another Mac or iOS device.
Apple said the new OS is the first to be built with cloud users in mind, allowing the over 100 million iCloud users easier access to their documents.
“The developer preview of Mountain Lion comes just seven months after the incredibly successful release of Lion and sets a rapid pace of development for the world’s most advanced personal computer operating system,” Schiller added.
The Mountain Lion OS also features a new security feature called Gatekeeper, designed to keep users safe from malicious software by giving you complete control over what apps are installed on your Mac.
Developers gain access to the new OS now.
