Dick Smith has spoken out on the negative impact ALDI and Costco are having on Australian producers, saying blame shouldn’t be directed at Coles and Woolworths for the supermarket price wars.
Aldi and Coles have come out on top amongst the big supermarket chains in customer service, with Aldi leading the field with a 92 percent approval rating from shoppers.
The milk price war that the big supermarket chains are engaging in is hurting the smaller businesses in the food production chain and farmers, cafes and independent food outlets are demanding the Federal Government steps in.
Coles and Woolworths’ milk price war, with ‘home brand’ milk varieties from both supermarkets being sold for $1 per litre as a loss leader will decimate small retailers and hurt farmers with Aldi and Franklins supermarkets also joining the war, with both lowering their milk prices to match.
Coles has refused to put the prices of its groceries online, fearing comparison shopping with rival Woolworths and independent retailers.
ALDI has announced a partnership with Planet Ark to bring carbon footprint labelling to supermarkets, an Australian first for retailers.
