A survey by national employment site CareerOne.com.au has found that 57 percent of Australian workers expect a pay rise this year and 41 percent will look for another job if they don’t get one.
The survey of 850 respondents found that most businesses communicate the pay rise process poorly, with 24 percent of employees afraid to ask their manager about a pay rise, unsure as to how it’s supposed to be handled.
According to CareerOne.com.au editor, Kate Southam, the global financial crisis is putting pressure on businesses nationwide and employees are working harder to cover the gaps.
Southam believes employers need to be honest about pay increases to stop their staff from walking.
“Employers need to be as honest as they can be about the budget for pay increases and the process of reviewing pay and awarding pay rises. With so much being asked of employees it is important employers find a way to recognise people.”
