The tech world has gone into mourning today, after Apple confirmed the passing of Steve Jobs.

In a statement published by AP, Apple’s board said it was “deeply saddened” to announce Jobs’ death, at the age of 56.

“Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve.”

“His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts.”

Jobs was first diagnosed with a rare form of pancreatic cancer in 2003, alerting Apple empoyees to his health problems in 2004. He underwent a liver transplant in 2009 and announced in January he would be taking an indefinite leave of absence from the innovative company.

Jobs officially stepped down from his role as CEO in August, when he was elected Chairman of the board and suggested Tim Cook take over as head of the company.

“I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.”

He was photographed in recent weeks looking increasingly frail and unwell, and wasn’t present at this week’s launch of the iPhone 4S.

Tributes have begun flowing in for the innovative leader, with many taking to social media to express their sadness at his passing. Apple has established a page on its website in memoriam of its former leader, asking people to send their tributes to rememberingsteve@apple.com
