For many Australians, social responsibility has become more important than ever.
1,000 charities have been registered since the Australian Charities and Not-for-Profits Commission was established eight months ago.
Susan Pascoe, ACNC Commissioner, said the figures reflect the fact that Australia is recognised as a generous nation with a strong and vibrant charitable sector.
“Not only do Australians donate more cash per capita than most comparable nations worldwide, they also get out there and start new organisations to help those in need. Most charities start very small, and are run by volunteers who want to do something positive for others,” Pascoe said.
Over a third of the charities were registered in NSW. Victoria came in second with 283, while South Australia had the highest rate of new registrations per capita.
While the ACNC was only established earlier this year, the number of applications for registrations it receives has been rising.
About 120 are registered each month, or four new charities a day. The majority focus on educational activities, followed by social and community welfare, and managing money.
