Two of Australia’s biggest ‘blue collar’ unions, are putting their differences aside and joining forces to push consumers to buy Australian.
The Australian Workers Union (AWU) and The Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union (AMWU) have joined forces to create the Manufacturing Alliance, in a bid to save the manufacturing industry which has lost more than 70,000 positions in the past year.
Peter Howes from the AWU said it was a matter of life or death for the manufacturing industry.
“If we don’t do something fast to address the enormous crisis that manufacturing is facing in this country, potentially we could lose this very important sector forever.”
Over the next six months the alliance will develop a national action plan to save the industry hit by the global recession. First on the list is to address next week’s ALP national conference, where they will push for a “buy Australian” focus.
