Pension age increase should come sooner: Abbott

The Opposition have criticised the Government’s decision to delay increasing the pension age until 2023, believing it should come sooner.

The Budget revealed that the Government plan to gradually raise the pension age to 67 by 2023, but Liberal frontbencher Tony Abbott said that it should come sooner.

“I think raising the pension age makes sense but if this was a Government that is serious about making tough decisions, this particular one would not have been put off until 2023.”

Minister for Community Services Jenny Macklin has defended the Government’s decision.

“We want to give people time to plan for their retirement and we want to do it gradually because it is a major change.”
