Part-time time workers are helping to prop up the economy, with the latest ABS Labour Force figures revealing part-time employment increased by 48,200 in July.
Debra Loveridge, CEO of specialist recruitment and HR services group, Randstad said the figures show employers are sensibly managing their workforce during the economic downturn, by reducing staff hours as opposed to cutting staff altogether.
“By employing part-time workers, or cutting back on full-time hours, employers can protect themselves from having to make large-scale redundancies in the event of a fall in customer demand and revenue.”
Loveridge also believes that workers can benefit from this shift in employment strategies.
“Those that have been retrenched may find it a good opportunity to enter part-time roles or take the opportunity to travel or continue further education until the economy picks up.”
