Consumers warned of ‘Acai’ weigh-loss spam

MessageLabs Intelligence Senior Analyst Paul Wood, is warning consumers to be aware of a spam email being circulated, touting a special offer for an Acai dietary supplement, Acai Power Slim, a berry indigenous to the Amazon Rain Forests of Brazil best known as an antioxidant believed to aid in weight loss.

According to MessageLabs Intelligence, the spam run is growing in size, increasing over the past two months from 5 percent of all spam to 10 percent.

“Pushing dietary supplements is an age-old spamming tactic, but this latest run puts a new spin on these familiar spam messages as the bad guys capitalise on a hot trend in nutrition,” said Wood.

Wood is urging all consumers to exercise extreme caution when opening up emails and clicking on certain links.
