Tougher rules for overseas workers

In a clear response to the economic downturn, tougher rules have been implemented for employers of overseas workers.

The tougher assessment criteria will mean that employers will have to meet a number of criteria when applying for sponsorships, nominations or visas for their workers.

The criteria includes:

  • How the position to be filled by an overseas worker will benefit Australia
  • A demonstration of why the skills and attributes for the role could not be found locally
  • An explanation of why the overseas worker is more skilled than a local worker
  • A clear understanding that the total remuneration package reflects the average remuneration for that occupational grouping
