Goodbye 2010 – Hello 2011!

As we look back on the past year, I’m sure the only positive thing a lot of business people feel they can take from 2010 is that they got through it. But the quiet successes that some Aussie businesses have achieved this year are both something to celebrate, and something to take inspiration from for 2011.

It’s fair to say this year has been challenging.  But despite it all, some businesses have not just survived but thrived in this market. And for most business owners, the difficult economic environment has tested their skills, honed their strengths, and made them more effective and more ambitious.

And that’s one of the really bright notes of the last year. In our November MYOB Business Monitor we asked businesses what they hoped to achieve next year – and the answer was resounding  –  Growth! Aussie business people are emerging from some hard times and are keen to focus firmly on business development.  In 2011 many of you want to achieve more, earn more and grow more, regardless of the current economic situation.  We love that spirit!

But first, we also have an opportunity to take a break, and take stock of where we really want to be in the next year.

For most people, the summer holidays probably can’t come soon enough.  One of the consistent themes of 2010 is how hard everyone has been working, even if it’s just to remain in place.  And, of course, that also goes for employees around the country.  I know I’ve been incredibly proud of how hard my team has worked throughout 2010.

So now is the time to celebrate those achievements – and share your appreciation with your staff. And that needn’t be a lavish affair or an expensive event – the point really is to acknowledge the difference they’ve made in some meaningful way, and share something of your vision for the year ahead.

The Christmas break is also a good time to take stock of that vision, and set some goals for the year ahead. But don’t forget to take some time out for yourself, to appreciate friends and family, and enjoy some time away from the office – even if it can only be for a couple of days.

On a personal note, I’d like to say thank you to the over 850,000 Aussie business owners who we have worked with over the last 12 months. It’s incredibly humbling and inspiring to be surrounded by people who have such a passion for what they do and genuinely love their work.

We look forward to working with you all again in the New Year. Until then, from everyone at MYOB, we wish you a safe and happy summer season.
