First maternity leave, now the Federal Government’s emissions trading (ETS) is under threat with business association the Australian Industry Group (AIG) calling for postponement of the scheme to 2012.
AIG chief executive Heather Ridout says businesses need more time to prepare, and due to the economic climate, it may be less feasible to implement the scheme: “[Businesses] can’t make the investment in the emission saving technology because the financials aren’t adding up because of the global financial crisis, and the lack of access to credit and the price of that credit.”
Meanwhile, the ETS has become a politically hot topic with both the Opposition and the Greens calling for higher emissions cuts. “It’s estimated that if we green our economy we’ll have 2.5 million to 3.5 million new jobs by the year 2025,” said Senator Bob Brown, of the Greens.
