The business case for recycling: Why the right equipment matters

For many businesses, waste management is often viewed as a necessary operational cost. However, investing in the right equipment can help organisations improve recycling outcomes, reduce contamination, recover valuable resources and potentially lower waste disposal costs over time.

Planet Ark has relaunched its Small Scale Recycling Equipment Catalogue on the revamped Recycling Near You website, creating a more accessible and comprehensive resource for Australian businesses looking to improve their waste management practices.

The catalogue is now integrated into Recycling Near You, following the merger of the former Business Recycling website into the platform last year. The integration has transformed Recycling Near You into Australia’s largest and most comprehensive recycling information platform, helping households, schools, government and businesses access trusted recycling information and services all in one place.

The Recycling Equipment Catalogue is designed to help businesses make informed decisions when selecting waste and recycling equipment suited to their operations. The platform includes information on a wide range of products, including small-scale recycling equipment, bins, balers, worm farms, digestors and other waste management solutions.

By making it easier for businesses to compare and identify suitable equipment, the Recycling Equipment Catalogue supports organisations looking to reduce waste sent to landfill, improve resource recovery and potentially lower waste management costs.

Small-scale recycling equipment can deliver both financial savings and measurable environmental benefits for businesses of many sizes. Better waste separation and recycling systems can reduce contamination, improve operational efficiency and decrease disposal costs, while also helping businesses meet sustainability goals and demonstrate environmental leadership.

Evidence from the NSW Environment Protection Authority’s Bin Trim program demonstrates the potential impact. More than 38,000 NSW businesses have participated in the program, collectively diverting over 145,000 tonnes of waste from landfill while identifying opportunities to reduce waste and associated costs.

Individual business case studies also highlight the value of investing in recycling equipment. One NSW plastic packaging manufacturer was able to divert approximately 26 tonnes of waste from landfill each year after installing a granulator to reprocess production offcuts back into manufacturing. The business also reported annual savings of approximately $4,000 on waste management costs while reducing its reliance on virgin materials.

The Recycling Equipment Catalogue aims to make it easier for businesses to find similar opportunities. Rather than navigating a fragmented market, organisations can browse by  equipment categories or the material they wish to recycle, compare available solutions and connect directly with suppliers.

The platform also supports equipment suppliers, who can list their products on the catalogue free of charge, making it easier for businesses across Australia to discover available recycling and waste management solutions.

The Recycling Equipment Catalogue project is a NSW Environment Protection Authority Waste and Sustainable Materials Strategy initiative, funded from the waste levy, in collaboration with Planet Ark.

Businesses interested in exploring equipment options or suppliers can access the catalogue through the Recycling Near You website.
