The latest figures from the Australia Bureau of Statistics have shown that one in 10 workers are their own boss, and are most likely to be male and working in the construction sector.
Of Australia’s 10.75 million workers, 10 percent were independent contractors in either their main or second job in November 2008.
The data also showed that 12 percent of men in the labour market either ran their own business or performed services for others, compared with five percent of working women.
However, experts are predicting this number will dwindle as the global financial crisis makes consumers less likely to spend money on their homes.
Demographer Bernard Salt said the number of self-employed people was likely to shrink as unemployment grows and consumers put off home renovations.
