Virgin Blue suffers setback, jobs cuts a ‘possibility.’

Virgin Blue has announced it is set to cut 28 of its 330 daily flights, which could mean job losses of up to 400.

The scheduled changes will take place from May 7, expected to be felt in one of its most common routes Sydney-Melbourne.

The announcements comes after the airline attempted a number of alternative options to boost the company and avoid job cuts, which included leave without pay, transferring staff to fledgling international carrier V Australia, shorter hours and job-sharing, to no avail.

Virgin chief executive Brett Godfrey has said that the airline will try to stem job loss as much as possible, but warns it may be unavoidable as the economic crisis takes hold.

“All in our business appreciate that we must remain vigilant and continue to adjust to changing market conditions. If that means we must implement further austerity measures, we will do that in order to keep our business strong.”
