Consumers warned of holiday scams

Consumers warned of holiday accommodation scams
As the festive season approaches and consumer start planning their holidays away, scammers are out there designing their next scam, says Australian Competition and Consumer Commission deputy chair, Peter Kell.
“This time each year, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission receives complaints from holiday makers who find that the cheap accommodation vouchers they have paid for either don’t arrive, are fakes, or simply can’t be used as promised,” he said.
According to Kell, the ACCC has identified a number of scams involving cheap holiday accommodation deals.
“These scammers know how to push the right buttons,” Kell warned. “Holidays are considered a luxury item and consumers are looking for the best way to stretch their holiday dollar. Scammers are taking advantage of this.”
Kell is advising consumers to be cautious of any unsolicited holiday offer and to avoid providing credit card details over the phone.
