Domestic tourism takes hit, Aussies holiday overseas
Domestic tourism is still bearing the brunt of the global financial crisis new figures show.
According to Tourism & Transport Forum figures, the cost of an overseas holiday is 5.1 percent cheaper now than 12 months ago, while the cost of domestic holidays has fallen only 2.6 percent.
Tourism & Transport Forum executive director Brett Gale said the latest consumer price index data illustrates the challenges domestic tourism is facing.
“Tourism operators cut their prices to stimulate demand during the downturn, and that’s reflected in these data… while some industry sectors are recovering strongly, tourism is being left behind.”

According to Tourism & Transport Forum figures, the cost of an overseas holiday is 5.1 percent cheaper now than 12 months ago, while the cost of domestic holidays has fallen only 2.6 percent.
