Sophie Kovic, founder Seed & Sprout

Meet Sophie Kovic: Founder who lives her brand values every day

“I’m always trying to find harmony between what my desires tell me and what my actions are doing. I think that localising many of the commodities we use in our day-to-day life and lowering the impact on the environment around us is critically important.”

In a world where business leaders often talk the talk, Sophie Kovic is one of the rare few who are truly working towards walking the walk. As the founder of Seed & Sprout, Sophie has not only built an award-winning eco-friendly business but is actively transforming her own life to embody the sustainable values at the heart of her brand.

Seed & Sprout was born in Byron Bay, Australia in 2016 after Sophie faced a problem that she could not find a solution for. After enrolling her son in a local school with a no-disposables policy, she struggled to find a single non-plastic lunch container that suited her needs, no matter her budget.

This sparked an idea and set her on a journey to create a company focused on products for everyday people with a goal of reducing reliance on single-use plastics.

From a simple idea to a sustainable movement

What started as a personal challenge quickly blossomed into a passionate mission. Today, Seed & Sprout is an online store crusading to end society’s obsession with single-use plastic. The company is renowned for ethical and sustainable products ranging from back-to-school supplies and personal care to composting solutions.

Sophie’s leadership has turned Seed & Sprout into a trusted brand for eco-conscious consumers, built on quality and environmental responsibility. Driven by her passion, she has built a thriving business with a loyal customer base across Australia and beyond. The brand’s achievements include winning the Green Online Retailer of the Year Award and multiple design awards, cementing its reputation as a pioneer in green business.

Two years ago, Sophie made a life-changing decision. She bought into a 66-acre community permaculture farm in the Byron Hinterland, securing a private two-acre block. There, she designed and built her own off-grid tiny home with a flourishing veggie garden and a natural, eco-friendly swimming pool.

This move reflects Sophie’s determination to merge her personal and professional worlds in pursuit of a more sustainable future. She explains, “Right now, I split my time between my tiny home and apartment living – as the juggle with children and work life is real! But I do know that the off-grid farm life aligns perfectly with my values.”

Her new lifestyle is about more than just living off the grid. “I’m always trying to find harmony between what my desires tell me and what my actions are doing,” Sophie says. “I think that localising many of the commodities we use in our day-to-day life, pooling resources, lowering the cost of living and lowering the impact on the environment around us is critically important.”

Sharing sustainable living with a growing digital community

For me, I try to remind myself that no one is perfect, but if we are all prioritising sustainability in small ways, we can contribute to a better future

Sophie also uses her platform to educate her community and inspire over 318,000 TikTok followers about alternative, planet-friendly ways of living. Her online presence shows that sustainable choices are not only possible but deeply rewarding.

Her journey to success is a testament to vision, innovation, and determination. Sophie’s story shows how a simple idea—creating a plastic-free lunchbox for her child—quickly grew into a company dedicated to ethical, sustainable products for everyday life. Through her leadership, Seed & Sprout has become a trusted name for eco-conscious consumers.

While Sophie does not claim perfection in her efforts to live sustainably, she remains committed to “doing the best” every day. She shares her advice for others feeling overwhelmed by the challenge of zero-waste living: “Trying to take on a zero-waste lifestyle all at once can be overwhelming, so my advice is to just start somewhere, even if that has to be baby steps.”

Her realistic and gentle approach encourages people to focus on progress over perfection. “For me, I try to remind myself that no one is perfect, but if we are all prioritising sustainability in small ways, we can contribute to a better future for generations to come.”

Leading with heart and vision

By living her brand’s mission daily, Sophie demonstrates what it means to lead with integrity, vision, and heart. She is proof that business can be a force for good and that real change starts at home.

Sophie’s future plans include committing full-time to her tiny home and the off-grid lifestyle. She openly acknowledges the challenges of balancing work, family, and sustainability but remains steadfast.
