The Government’s recent commitment to an annual 3 percent increase in defense spending for the next decade has been harshly criticised by the Greens citing it will drain billions of dollars from schools, hospitals and the war on climate change.
Greens leader Bob Brown said that there was no reason for an increase in defence spending as “no country is threatening Australia” and the commitment is “out of whack” at a time when there is rising unemployment and small business stress.
He said the money would be better spending towards tackling climate change.
