Government fails to pay small businesses on time: Ciobo

The Rudd Government has broken an election promise by failing to pay tens of thousands of Australia’s small businesses on time, says Shadow Small Business Minister Steven Ciobo.

According to Ciobo, the Government has failed to pay small business invoices on time, as Small Business Minister Craig Emerson conceded the value of Commonwealth invoices to small businesses was $16 billion, of which 70 percent was from the Defence Department which paid almost 48,000 small business invoices late.

“This was one of the pillars of Labor Government small business policy to pay all small business invoices within 30 days,” said Ciobo.

“At a time when cash flow is arguably the biggest challenge facing Australia’s 2.4 million small businesses, prompt payment of invoices is crucial to the health of their businesses and indeed their survival,” he added.

Ciobo’s comments were echoed by the Council of Small Business of Australia, which said small businesses should not have to endure the red tape of having to re-invoice the government with the addition of interest for late payment.
