Government defends stimulus despite $800 million unclaimed

The Federal Government has had to defend its stimulus package after it was reported that up to $800 million in payments went unclaimed.

The Australian Financial Review has revealed that 270,000 taxpayers failed to meet the June 30 deadline for lodging their annual tax returns, resulting in an $800 million shortfall.

Competition Policy and Consumer Affairs Minister Craig Emerson told ABC TV that critics who have accused the government of putting too much money into the “cash splash” can’t have it both ways, and that 210,000 people would be out of work without the stimulus spending.
