The latest Google Maps initiative was launched today at Sydney’s Taronga Zoo.
The Street View Trike will enable Google to capture imagery from places cars can’t go. Taronga Zoo is the first, but the public are being asked to suggest locations too.
Street View launched in Australia in August 2008, letting Aussies take a virtual walk down nearly every public road in the country using imagery collected by a car with a specially mounted camera on top. The Street View Trike will help Google gather images of off-the-beaten track and pedestrian-only locations, taking Street View beyond road-accessed landmarks such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge, to places like Taronga Zoo and perhaps even national parks.
The 100-kilo trike is equipped with a camera and GPS system.
To suggest your location for the Trike, visit www.google.com.au/trike within the next two weeks.
