Dating website under fire for creating ‘fake profiles’
An online dating website has come under fire from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission for creating ‘fake profiles’ and misleading users.
The ACCC has instituted proceedings in the Federal Court against Jetplace Pty Ltd, the operator of website www.redhotpie.com.au.
The ACCC alleges Jetplace created and published fictional profiles on its website and used them to send ‘flirty’ and other messages to registered users.
According to the ACCC, the directors of Jetplace, Mark Semaan and Maxwell falsely represented that members could socialise with – and potentially meet – every profile that was viewable on the site, “when it was not the case”.
The ACCC alleges the directors of Jetplace, Mr Mark Semaan and Mr Maxwell James McGuire, were knowingly concerned in, and party to the contravening conduct.
A directions hearing has been scheduled for 10 December 2009 in the Federal Court, Perth.
