Federal Finance Minister Lindsay Tanner has played down speculation about a possible 50 basis point rise in official interest rates, as economists try to predict the RBA’s next move.
Economists predict concerns about inflation may prompt the central bank to increase interest rates by atleast 50 basis points, higher than the expect 25 basis points.
However, Tanner said that there is always speculation of this kind, and that the government was not going to put any more pressure on the RBA.
“You’re just as likely to find in tomorrow’s newspapers there’ll be speculation in the opposite direction,” he told ABC radio.
