Small business jump online for advice in downturn

Dell Australia’s latest SMB survey has found that the majority of small and medium businesses are turning to online for information and advice on technologies that would benefit their business and improve efficiencies.

The survey of 203 Dell Australia small and medium business customers found that 52 percent of respondents find reading about IT in print and online media and/or blogs extremely useful, while 43 percent find speaking with industry colleagues and business networking extremely useful.

The survey also found that most businesses (60 percent) are cutting back on staff benefits such as entertainment, travel and conferences in the downturn, as 83 percent conduct a review of internal and external businesses process, in order to streamline business processes.

In a clear sign that small businesses are looking to cut back on expenses, they are turning to online as the most cost effective way to find out information not only about IT solutions, but general business advice.

According to Dell Australia marketing director, Jay Turner the results are not surprising, as small businesses seem to be “pulling in” in the downturn, as opposed to “expanding” and that online has become an important resource for businesses in tough times.
