Low-income households in the ACT will struggle to pay for a proposed water price hike, says the ACT Council of Social Service (ATCOSS).
ATCOSS says it is worried low-income households will struggle to pay for the extra $100 a year the ACTEW Corporation wants to charge ratepayers from 2013 to pay for the Cotter Dam enlargement and other water projects.
ATCOSS president Roslyn Dundas says the Government needs to do more to help people who already cannot pay the bills.
“It’s a significant impact – we know of many families, many individuals in the ACT community who are not making ends meet today,” she said.
Dundas says the corporations cannot keep asking people to pay more for water and electricity.
