Facebook has agreed to give users of the social networking site better protection and more privacy, following negotiations with Canada’s privacy commissioner, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.
According to the reports, users will be given more transparency and control over the information they provide to third-party developers of applications such as games and quizzes, and users will be given the opportunity to delete their account as opposed to just deactivating it.
Privacy Commissioner Jennifer Stoddart announced in a statement that the changes meant “the privacy of 200 million Facebook users in Canada and around the world will be far better protected.”
The changes came about following an investigation into gaps in the social networking site which breached Canadian privacy laws. Users worldwide will now benefit from the changes, having more control over their private information.
