Broadband network ‘environmentally friendly’

The Government’s proposed National Broadband Network could reduce Australia’s carbon footprint and cut consumers’ power bills, according to Communications Minister, Stephen Conroy.

At an address at the National Press Club in Canberra, Minister Conroy said that through the network, consumers will be connected to ‘smart grids’ which means they will pay less for electricity through a more efficient use of power.

He said the broadband network is “green technology” and will help to reduce carbon emissions and improve overall efficiencies.

“Smart grids connected by broadband raise the potential to not only monitor energy use but to allow remote adjustment of lights or temperature.

“For households this means opportunities for reduced power consumption and costs. This in turn allows them to sell the recovered power on the market, reducing the need for new power generators.”
