80,000 construction jobs under threat

The future is looking grim for those in the building and construction industry, according to a study by Access Economics.

The study predicts more than 80,000 jobs could be lost in the building and construction industry during the next three years, with apprentice numbers to fall by 10 percent.

According to the report, Access Economics sees “the downturn in business investment as carrying too much momentum to be fully offset in the short-term by additional government investment and a housing sector recovery.”

The Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU), has called on the Government to draw up a ‘crisis’ plan in a bid to stem the job loss.

The union’s national construction division secretary, Dave Noonan, says the predicted 10 percent fall in apprentice numbers has the potential to hinder the industry’s ability to recover from the financial crisis.
