Does Melbourne do better small business?

Dell has just announced the finalists in its 2009 Small to Medium Business Excellence Award and it struck me that half of them are from Victoria. Sydney has always held the reputation as the big business hub of Australia, but could it be that Melbourne is winning the race in the SME stakes?

Of the final 10, five are from VIC, two from WA, two from NSW and one from QLD. Could it be the same things that attract people to Melbourne as a place to live are the same things that make its entrepreneurs succeed there?

Does Melbourne’s arty, cultural side make for a more creative, globally aware, savvy businessperson? Is the more relaxed vibe, where something a little different is embraced, more suitable for the smaller business that could go unnoticed in Sydney’s CBD?

What do you think?
